Suns Out, Tongues Out — The Happiness of Dogs in the Sun
June 5, 2024
There's nothing quite like watching a dog tip their head back into the sun. Warm weather brings out the best in our pups — more outside time, more sniffing, more play. It also calls for a little extra care, especially on Long Island where humidity sneaks up fast. Here's how we keep summer days joyful and safe.
Why dogs love a sunny day
Sunshine boosts mood and supports healthy sleep cycles for dogs the same way it does for people. Outdoor play also gives them richer smells, more terrain, and a chance to move their bodies in ways that a hallway run can't match.
Smart summer habits
- Walk early morning or after sunset when pavement is cool
- Test pavement with the back of your hand — if it's hot for you, it's hot for paws
- Bring water on every outing, not just the long ones
- Find shaded grass to rest mid-walk
- Watch for heavy panting, drooling, or wobbliness — signs to head inside
Sun-friendly daycare
On warm days at our Franklin Square resort, we rotate between shaded outdoor play and climate-controlled indoor spaces. Pups get pool time, frozen enrichment, and plenty of cool-down breaks so they enjoy the season without overdoing it.
Don't forget the coat
A clean, well-maintained coat actually helps dogs regulate heat. Our mobile grooming vans come to your door across Long Island and the Hamptons, so summer baths, deshedding, and trims happen without you ever stepping into traffic.
